After students each create a food group riddle, the teacher collects and poses them to the entire class to answer
Activity Outcomes
- Create and answer Five Food Group riddles
What You Need:
- Crayons or markers
- Paper - 1 sheet per student
- Pencils
- Chalk
- Chalkboard
What You Do:
1. Ask the class a riddle about a food.
For example: “I’m a food made from milk. I’m yellow. I’m kept in the refrigerator. I make a good sandwich. What am I? (cheese)
2. Share a few more riddles. As a class, write a riddle on the board to teach students how to construct one. Make the following points:
- You must think of different ways to describe your food.
- You should end the riddle with the words, "What am I?"
3. Next, explain that they are going to write their own riddles. Walk students through the process:
- Distribute the paper. Have them fold their paper in half, like a greeting card.
- Ask them to think of a favorite food that belongs to one of the Five Food Groups. As soon as they have thought of their food, have them look at you and smile.
- Have all students write the name of their food on the inside of the cards. Ask them to close their cards.
- Have students write their riddle on the outside of the card and draw a picture of the food on the inside of the card, near the name of the food.
- Collect the cards. Read the riddles and let the class guess the food. Open the cards to reveal the answer.
