Activity Outcomes:
- Compare their size to the size of baby clothes
- Brainstorm a “Foods That Help Me Grow”
list
- Interview a parent or family member and write a journal entry or story about when they were a baby
What You Need:
- 19-inch piece of string or 19-inch line drawn on chalkboard
- “When I Was
a Baby” handout (pdf) 1 per student
What You Do:
1. Ask children if they remember when they were a baby.
2. Hold up a few items of baby clothes
and ask students if they ever wore clothes this small. Would the clothes fit
them today? Why?
3. Have students show you how big they
were when they were babies. Show students the 19-inch string and tell them
this is about the size of a baby. Have a few children compare their length
to the string or a 19-inch line drawn on the chalkboard.
4. Ask students to think about their
parents (or another favorite adult). Ask if they think that person was ever
as small as the piece of string or baby clothes.
5. Ask:
- How did your parents get to be as tall as they are
today?
- How did you get to be as tall as you are?
6. Ask students what some of the things
they need to grow and stay healthy. Plenty of sleep, exercise and healthy
foods.
7. Brainstorm a list of “Foods
the Help Me Grow” and write them on the chalkboard. Make sure that the
list includes foods from all the Five Food Groups – Milk, Meat, Fruits,
Vegetables and Grains.
8. Distribute and review the “When
I Was a Baby” (pdf) handout. Direct students to ask a parent or other adult these questions. Remind them to bring their completed handout to class the next day.
9. Have students share what they learned
and write a journal entry or story about when they were a baby.
