Regardless of age, everyone needs 3-5 servings of calcium
rich foods every day. Students from ages 9 through 18 need 4-5 servings to
meet the Dietary Recommended Intake (DRI) calcium goal of 1300 milligrams
per day. Dairy products, especially milk, cheese and yogurt are the richest
sources of calcium.
Using food labels, help students to complete deposit slips
for the calcium foods they eat during a day. As an alternative, encourage
students to track a hypothetical or typical day's consumption. Have individuals
total their deposits and compare them to the DRI goal of 1300 milligrams.
Students can also create a bar graph comparing their individual totals to
the DRI goal. Students who do not reach 1300 milligrams can brainstorm ways
to reach that goal.
