Answer:
The rule of thumb for a nutritious breakfast is to include foods from at least three of the Five Food Groups. Both traditional and non traditional breakfast foods are fine, as long as they are nutritious foods from MyPyramid's Five Food Groups. Try these suggestions:
- Smoothie and whole-grain toast, bagel or muffin - Blend 1/2 cup of your favorite frozen fruit with an 8-ounce container of low-fat, yogurt. Keep the fridge and freezer stocked with yogurt and frozen fruit and set out the blender the night before. For breakfast to go, take the smoothie in an insulated, covered cup.
- Yogurt, fruit and whole-grain muffin - Truly grab 'n go breakfast. Remember that large muffins and bagels count as two to four Grain Group servings - take half to keep calories in check.
- Whole-wheat toast with peanut butter - Enjoy with a glass of ice-cold, low-fat or fat-free milk.
- Yogurt parfait - Layer low-fat yogurt, whole-grain cereal and fresh or canned fruit in a bowl. Use a plastic glass for a breakfast to go. .
- Leftover pizza and a piece of fruit - Heat it in the microwave. Try other leftovers, too, like spaghetti with sauce, macaroni and cheese, or chicken and mashed potatoes.
- Whole-wheat bagel with melted cheese - Add a side of baby carrots or sliced apples.
- Frozen French toast or pancakes - Heat in the microwave and top with yogurt and fruit, such a berries, raisins or sliced bananas.
- Rice bowl - Top leftover rice with low-fat milk, raisins and a sprinkle of sugar. For a savory version, use leftover veggies, meat and shredded, low-fat cheese. Heat in a microwave-safe bowl.
