Question:
Are the new yogurt smoothies in the dairy case good for kids’ snacks?
Answer:
Single-serve, drinkable yogurts and smoothies are a new healthy, to-go option that nutrition conscious parents and teachers can feel good about! Kids love them, they taste great, and best of all, they provide calcium and protein that growing kids need. Some also provide vitamin D and fiber. Easy-to-pack, they’re a great alternative to fruit drinks, which provide little or no nutrition. Many parents are concerned about added sugars in these products. It’s important to keep in mind that compared to nutrient-empty juice drinks and sodas frequently packed in lunch and snacks boxes, they pack plenty of nutrition. And as when choosing any product, it’s best to compare labels.
- Look for a product that has at least 10 percent, and ideally more than 20%, Daily Value for calcium.
- Look for products where added sugars such as sugar, fructose and high-fructose corn syrup are further down in the ingredient listing. Ingredients are listed in order of the amount in a food.
Choose a portion that’s right for your child. For most kids 4 ounces, and no more than 10 ounces.
