Question:
MyPyramid shows the amount needed from each food group in cups and ounces. How can I help my students follow these recommendations?
Answer:
The MyPyramid symbol communicates the message that "one size does not fit all," and the amount we need each day depends on how active we are, our sex and our age. Because keeping track of amounts can be difficult for school-age children, it is helpful to "translate" this into number of servings. For the average, moderately active 6-to 8- and 9-to 13-year-old, the amount needed from each food group translates into the following servings each day:
|
Food Group
|
Recommended Servings Ages 6 to 8
|
Recommended Servings Ages 9 to 13
|
| Milk Group |
2-3 (2 cups over a day) |
3 (3 cups) |
| Meat Group |
2 (2-3 ounce serving) |
2 (2-3 ounce serving) |
| Vegetable Group |
3 (1 1/2 cups) |
4 - 5 (2 to 2 1/2 cups) |
| Fruit Group |
3 (1 1/2 cups) |
3 (1 1/2 cups) |
| Grain Group |

5 (5 ounces) |
