Get Involved in Nutrition Choices At School

Question:
How can I get involved and make a difference in nutrition choices at my child's school?

Answer:
Beginning this school year, schools that offer federally funded breakfast and lunch programs are required by law to have a School Wellness Policy in place. Now, the focus is on implementing these policies, which means there is plenty of opportunity for parents to participate and make a difference in the nutrition choices offered. Here are the key steps you can take:
  • Learn more about your school's wellness policy. The school principal or nutrition director should have a copy.
  • Make your voice heard about healthier food and beverage choices, including cold white and flavored milk in kid-friendly plastic bottles, at school board and parent-teacher organization meetings.
  • Visit the School Foodservice and School Wellness sections of our Web site and learn more about school wellness .
  • Tell you children's teachers about Dairy Council's® new classroom programs Little D's Nutrition Expedition™ for 2nd grade and Arianna's Nutrition Expedition™ for 4th grade. Enrollment is free and easy!
