New England Dairy & Food Council
(NEDFC) is now accepting applications for the 2008
Expanding Breakfast Awards. 1st place ($5,000), 2nd
place ($2,000) and 3rd place ($1,000) awards will
be given to three schools/districts in CT, MA, NH,
RI & VT in recognition of their outstanding expanding
breakfast programs.
Expanding breakfast programs go beyond
traditional school breakfast programs by bringing
breakfast to the students. Serving breakfast in the
classroom, grab & go, after 1st period or on the
bus schools can lessen the potential social stigma
associated with school breakfast and increase participation.
Schools that are interested in applying
for the NEDFC 2008 Expanding Breakfast awards are
encouraged to do so using our electronic
survey application. (The application link is a
pop-up so you will need to turn off your pop-up blocker
before you can access the application.) It would be
helpful to gather all the necessary information to
complete the application process prior to beginning
the online survey. Downloading the hardcopy
application will provide you with all the necessary
information to gather. The hardcopy application may
also be submitted via mail, fax, or e-mail.
Application
submission deadline: November 14, 2008
Winners to be announced: December 15, 2008

3-A-Day of Dairy
Nutrition Education Grant
The 3-A-Day of Dairy Nutrition Education Grant offered by New England Dairy & Food Council awards one $5,000 grant to an organization or individual in CT, MA, NH, RI, or VT proposing an innovative, school-based nutrition education program aimed at empowering kids to become advocates for healthy eating, including three servings of dairy a day.
The 2007 winner was Plainfield High School in Plainfield, CT. Their interactive lessons will teach students about the Food Guide Pyramid recommendations, how to read nutrition labels, and easy recipes to fuel their day. Each month, the cafeteria will host fun events, such as a "Rap your way to 3-A-Day" rapping contest, to reinforce lessons learned in the classroom with an emphasis on dairy nutrition and healthy dairy snacks. Click here to learn more about the winning program.
Visit the 3-A-Day of Dairy website for other great ideas involving milk, cheese and yogurt.
Leadership in School Nutrition
(LISN) Awards
Sponsored by National Dairy Council® and Dairy Field Magazine, the LISN Award reflects a critical time where schools and industry need to develop closer relationships to create products and programs that offer children appealing, healthy options, so they "choose wellness." In support of school wellness goals, the LISN Award acknowledges and promotes these partnerships, rewarding those enhancing the school milk experience. The prizes received are earmarked for use toward future school nutrition efforts.
Teams of school districts and dairy processors win the annual award. The first-place winning team receives a check for $5,000 each to be used toward future school nutrition efforts; one second-place winning team receives checks for $2,000 each; and one third-place winning team receives checks for $1,000 each. Winners are chosen by judges with expertise in child nutrition and the dairy, beverage and food industries.
Thank you for applying for the 3rd Annual LISN Awards.
The winners will be announced during School Nutrition
Association's Child Nutrition and Industry Conference,
January 13-15, 2008 in Monterey, Calif. For more information
on the LISN awards visit www.lisn-awards.com.
